Web Banner Design

Whats a web banner?

So whats a web banner? A web banner is a thin banner like image that is designed as an advertisement for something, and of course, is advertised on another website. You 99.99% most likely have seen one; It’s those annoying little pop ups that tend to be towards the lower part of your screen.

Web banner specifics

Web banners may often appear in a variety of sizes but the most common ones are 300×250, 728×90, 160×600, 468×60, 120×600, 300×100, 88×31, 300×600, 336×280, and 320×50. The first 3 make up the majority of the web banners you see and for a good reason. These web banner sizes are very much visible on your screen, are large enough to effectively advertise as well as be easily visible to the user, without being overly intrusive. A lot of the other sizes you see start to get a little on the small side or are very square and start to awkwardly eat up space on you screen making them less appealing.

Who makes these?

Typically a graphic designer is wanted for this job which makes sense. It is especially good if they’ve had experience in creating something related to advertising. And its a worthwhile job too. On average you can make $55k a year doing this which isn’t bad at all. Entry level work is still upwards to $33k.

Personally I don’t think this job is for me. It seems very linear and boring to me to continually make these little tiny strips of work that a good portion of people are just going to click away from. Other design work though still has appeal to it. Just not this.
