What purpose do these serve?

Internal, external, and cloud storage devices all have their own advantages as well as places to be used. Depending on what you are doing, one can be more beneficial to use than one of the alternative options.

Internal storage as the name says is located physically inside the computer. The most commonly used example of an internal storage device would be a Hard Disk Drive. These devices are connected to the PC and are powered by the power supply then connected to the motherboard its self with the use of a SATA cable. These types of systems will come build into your computer of course and are typically quite reliable but only pose a problem if something goes wrong because you will have to open the computer casing in order to fix the problem.

External storage devices connect from the outside of the computer typically through a USB connection. They’re great for adding an additional form of storage without having to open the computer case to install another hard drive. Examples of these devices and Flash drives, External Hard Drives, and DVDs along with other kinds of disks. These devices can be used for simply information that you have to transport between systems or something as important as a back up for your operating system in case of some critical issue. Though they are usually built to be more durable because of their portable nature, the main issue is any damage that can be caused to them.

Cloud storage is a method of storage where the information is backed up remotely and saved over a network. The business model for these types of services is usually based on consumption basis meaning you pay for what you use. A common use for cloud storage is for backing up of critical info or storage of info that doesn’t used often allowing for more important things to be saved on the system itself.
